1. Ingredients overview [Docusate sodium 100mg] Classification: Stool softener, surfactant laxative Main use: Softens hard stools caused by constipation, making bowel movements easier Usual dose: 50-300mg per day for adults (divided or single dose) Duration of action: The effect usually appears 12-72 hours after administration

2. Mechanism of action (how it works) Docusate sodium is a type of surfactant that reduces the surface tension of stool in the intestines, making it easier for water and lipids to penetrate the stool. Moisture retention → softens stool Increased smoothness → reduces strain during bowel movements Unlike stimulant laxatives, it does not force the intestines to move, so it is less likely to cause abdominal pain or sudden diarrhea.

3. Features No stimulating ingredients: Unlike stimulant laxatives such as senna and bisacodyl, it does not directly stimulate intestinal peristalsis, so it is less addictive and dependent even with long-term use. Gentle action: It may take half a day to three days for the effects to appear. Can also be used preventively: It is often used in cases where you want to avoid straining, such as for hemorrhoids, after surgery, or after childbirth. Available in a variety of dosage forms, including liquid, capsules, tablets, and syrup.

4. Safety and Precautions Major side effects: abdominal cramps, mild diarrhea, nausea (rare) Contraindications: intestinal obstruction, unexplained abdominal pain, suspected intestinal perforation Interactions: Avoid using in combination with mineral oil as it increases absorption and increases the risk of fat-soluble vitamin deficiency and aspiration into the lungs Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Considered relatively safe, but it is recommended to consult a doctor
